ABOUT THE ASSOCIATION...
Founded in 1937, the Association's objectives were established then as:
"The objects of the Association shall
be, inter alia, to promote the well-being of the community resident in
the Riddlesdown locality for such purposes as may by law be deemed to
be charitable and in particular by associating the Local Authorities,
voluntary organisations and residents in a common effort to further
health, advance education, and to foster a community spirit for the
achievement of such purposes as aforesaid."
Your Committee nowadays interprets the above
statement as a mandate to:
Keep watch on the Riddlesdown environment, and to act where possible to maintain
it to a high standard - this to cover general
appearance and tidiness, roads, pavements, verges, footpaths, street
furniture, lighting, traffic and road safety. In doing this, to liaise
with Council, police, traffic agencies/companies, schools, churches,
Corporation of London Keepers.
Monitor and try to improve local services
including refuse collection, street cleaning, trains, buses.
Monitor planning applications and to support or
oppose as necessary in the interests of the community.
Hold social functions that foster a community
spirit - sports/fun days, children's party.
Maintain good relations with local traders and
enlist their support where beneficial.
Publish the Recorder and use it to report our
activities and to encourage local participation.
Build reserves that will finance our activities
and prepare for any unusual contingencies that may arise.
THE ASSOCIATION
The Riddlesdown Residents Association covers approximately 1350 households from
27 roads (see below). This means that at least 2500 people are likely to be within the membership.
The Riddlesdown Recorder, our magazine, is delivered twice yearly
to all households. This magazine endeavours to publish information and
articles of interest to residents. The editor (see
Committee Page) is always interested in considering for inclusion
articles by residents. The magazine includes Community Pages
designed to hold small pieces about local associations, activities and
events. No charge is made for these. Space is limited so please get
your contributions in early. New material is required for each issue. All contributions are required by the
last days of February and August for the April and October issues
respectively.
Subject to space being available, we also display local and other advertisements for a fee based on
size and location. Please send
in ad designs to the Editor.
Note that local advertisers (ie. resident in the RRA area) take
priority over others.
Delivery of the Recorder and of other material is done by our band of road stewards who perform a
very worthwhile and often unsung service for the community. They also
collect the annual subscription of £3.00 (concessions are available
for senior citizens). The road stewards are recruited and organised by
John Rapp, Membership Secretary. Apply to John (8660 9531) or
any Committee member if you wish to
join the Association.
We are always in need of road stewards to replace those that
unfortunately leave, or to lighten the burden of those with large
patches. Please contact John if you can help.
We organise annual events including the Children's Fancy Dress Party
in January/February, and a Summer Fun Day usually in July and subject
to weather. Please watch out for details in the Riddlesdown Recorder and
on the four notice boards around the area. These are situated outside
Riddlesdown Pharmacy/Wessons (the Post Office in Lower Barn
Road), outside P. & P. Saban, (confectioners and newsagents in
Mitchley Avenue), near the main entrance of St. Edmunds Church, on the church green at the Mitchley Avenue end of Lower Barn Road.
Sometimes we use the Message Board in Riddlesdown Station Waiting
Room.
