Deer on Purley Downs golf course?
Aug 23rd, 2011 at 1:40pm

Is anyone aware of deer living on Purley Downs golf course, or were my eyes deceiving me?! I'm pretty sure I saw a huge stag deer with very impressive antlers on the course a few weeks ago. I was very surprised to see it there - I didn't think the area was big or rural enough to have deer.

It is highly probable that your saw a stag on the golf course as we understand that deer have been in the rear gardens of houses in Court Hill backing onto the golf course. There are a number of acres of woodland behind the houses in Lower Barn Rd adjoining the golf course which are undisturbed and the public have no access to.

Certainly I have seen deer, nearby on Riddlesdown Common and also in Oaks Rd, coming off Shirley Hills, where one nearly collided with my car !

Thanks for the reply Phil.

My wife has since seen the stag early one morning from our son's bedroom window so I am not going crazy! We live on Westfield Avenue and our garden backs onto the course. How lucky we are to live with such wonderful animals so close by!
