Potential ww2 shelter under garden
Dec 6th, 2014 at 3:13pm

Hi,
We have recently discovered an entrance to what looks like a ww2 shelter in our garden. Previous owners were not aware of it.
Personally hope we can turn it into a wine cellar Smiley but before that I wanted to know if you knew any expert or the best person to contact to check exactly what it is and if its structurally safe to use. It is roughly 3m x 2m wide with concrete ceiling and walls.

Would appreciate any advice on this matter.
Thanks!
Chris

Hi Chris - wow, to uncover it after all this time!

Doing a Google search it is not uncommon though,https://www.google.co.uk/?gws_rd=ssl#q=old+air+raid+shelter+in+garden

If you want to use it as a wine cellar, it might be best to get it checked by a Chartered Building Surveyor or Structural Engineer. Both the RICS http://www.ricsfirms.com/and Institution of Structural Engineers http://www.istructe.org/finding-a-structural-engineer have surveyors locally, so look on their websites. Obviously ask about their fee beforehand!

Croydon Council's Planning Department or Libraries maybe interested, so give them a call to see if it is worth recording?
